Dr. Bartlett is Vice President the 16-hospital Surgery Service and Director of Academic Affairs for OSF Healthcare and Clinical Professor of Surgery at the University of Illinois, Chicago, where he is an active transplant surgeon.

Dr. Bartlett received his medical degree from the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine. He received his general surgery training at the University of Pennsylvania and his vascular surgery fellowship at Northwestern University. Dr. Bartlett is Board-certified by the American Board of Surgery in General Surgery and Vascular Surgery. He received one month of fellowship in pancreas transplantation training with David Sutherland M.D., Ph.D. prior to beginning his first faculty position at the University of California Davis where he performed the first pancreas transplant in California. From 1991-2018, Dr. Bartlett was Chief of Transplantation, Chair of Surgery, Senior Vice President and finally Executive Vice President at the University of Maryland. During Dr. Bartlett’s time at the University of Maryland he led one of the nation’s busiest kidney and kidney pancreas transplant programs. Areas of interest for Dr. Bartlett have included pancreas and islet transplantation. His team performed the world’s first full face transplant and developed a reproducible pre-clinical model of face transplantation. His laboratory developed a successful life supporting porcine xenograft pre-clinical model that served as the scientific basis for the eventual first use of clinical porcine cardiac xenograft. Dr. Bartlett was President of the International Pancreas and Islet Transplant Association (IPITA) from 2010-2012 and was on the Council for 12 years. While President, Dr. Bartlett championed holding a biennial IPITA research retreats in Prague, Czech Republic, and Oxford University.

Dr. Bartlett continues his transplantation career at the University of Illinois Chicago where he has developed an outreach program and Rockford, Illinois and will soon open a second program serving the southern tier of Chicago. He remains active in transplantation surgery, research as well as teaching the fellows in the operating room.
